Although women now account for more than half of the management positions in the US, they still only fill 16% of the top positions. Why aren't there more women in the boardroom? There are many factors that play into this gap that are not related to "traditional discrimination." In particular, today's leaders do not know how to manage the current generation of high-achieving women, and corporate cultures do not meet their needs and values.
Few people realize that there are two generations of women holding management positions in numbers in US corporations. Most of the research and books have focused on the difficulties and needs of the first generation, with an emphasis either on "Finding Your Voice and Claiming Your Power" or on "Managing Your Voice So They Don't Call You Bitch."
The second generation of women high-achievers, born between 1955 and 1985, are better trained, more savvy and have a stronger sense of self than their pioneer predecessors. These women have a voice, are comfortable with their power, and know the power of collaboration. They are passionate, dynamic women driven to create results. Yet they can also feel overwhelmed, empty, angry or anxious. When they don't get relief, they look for another job or start their own business instead of fighting for a boardroom seat.
In 2007, Dr. Reynolds completed her doctoral dissertation where she surveyed and interviewed fifty of these women to find out what these women want from their careers (dissertation available on request). In particular, she was able to define WHO they are, WHAT they need, and WHY they often feel empty or angry at work.
The results of this study suggest that high-achieving women would benefit from a different type of guidance than they have been offered in the past. Most importantly, as they learn how to articulate a purpose they can align their energies to, they would benefit from 1) having a coach who can help them with sorting out “who” they are as they make important personal transitions, and 2) participating with other high-achieving women with similar desires and goals.
Therefore, Dr. Reynolds is providing special services for these dynamic women driven to achieve. They include:
- Personal coaching for high-achieving women
- Speaking at women's conferences
- A Blog for the women to connect and learn from each other called The Burden of Greatness: Understanding the Restless Spirit of Driven Women.
